Questions and answers
Question: What is Toastmasters? Toastmasters is an international non-profit educational corporation headquartered in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. It was founded in US, but has since spread to most parts of the world. Our mission is to improve communication skills, public speaking skills and leadership skills among our members and in general.
Question: What do Toastmasters do? The most important thing about being a Toastmaster, is attending the meetings in your local club. The meetings are the place where you can learn by doing. Most important, this is your chance to get up and speak in front of the other clubmembers. You will work through manuals, which will guide you through all the important parts of public speaking, such as working with your voice, your words and your bodylanguage. After each speech you will receive an evaluation from one of the other members. But while Toastmasters are most famous for doing speeches, there are also other opportunities for learning at during a meeting. You could be the leader of the meeting, making sure that the meeting is done in a proper and efficient way. Or you could be an evaluator, giving another member a constructive evaluation, that promotes growth. And finally, you could take part in the tabletopics. Here you will be asked to improvise a 1-2 minute speech, based on a subject from the tabletopicmaster. But you will not be limited to telling the truth, so just say anything!
Question: What if I don´t like public speaking? Many persons don´t like the idea of public speaking at all. It is said, that fear of public speaking is the most common of all fears. But in today´s business environment communication skills are vital. It is often important to be able to give presentations, lead meetings and speak up in large gatherings. Luckily, you can learn these skills in Toastmasters (or become better at them). In a safe and supportive environment, you will be able to practice until you feel comfortable. And by then, you might have started to enjoy doing speeches. Your first speech will be the 'icebreaker'. There are only two goals for the icebreaker. Firstly, you should get up and talk in front of the other clubmembers. Secondly, you should tell us about yourself, so that we know a little about you.
Do you speak in Danish or in English? We do both. Every other meeting is in Danish, and every other meeting is in English.
